Weather: Brisk winds follow .2 of rain.
Where: Cows (254) in L-5. Bulls (18) + 14 horses (always been mixed) in WG-4. Heifers (74) LS-1. Calves-yearlings (264) in EG-4. Cows two move (10 +5). 13 new calves. Heifers stay put. Calves begin trail back to corrals to prepare for shipment to new pasture at the Blake’s north of Big Timber. Somewhat frequent siting’s of short-eared owls. Last time we had a lot of these grass loving owls the rains came in abundance. We can hope.

Weather: Threats of rain finally actualize with some welcome evening showers.
Where: Cows (254) in L-5. Bulls (18) + 14 horses (always been mixed) in WG-4. Heifers (74) LS-1. Calves-yearlings (264) in EG-4. Two splits for cows (10+10); Yearlings (5); Heifers back in old lane; bulls to new split. Over halfway with heifers. EG-4 is a complex ‘go back’ piece of ground that was farmed in the early homestead years and was abandoned to allow natives to return on their own. The clover year of 2018 set this natural restoration back in scattered patches literally killing the natives through overwhelming competition for moisture. Today there is a battle between natives and annuals (mostly Japanese brome) and it is not clear who will win. Our aggressive grazing with the yearlings appears to be setting the annuals back. It will be useful to revisit this area later this summer. Weather: Forecast proves false…dry again.

I hold the fort while everyone attends Wacker branding. Weather: Nice with wind and more wind. Forecasting badly needed moisture for later in the weekend.

Kestrel pair acrobatic flying display all afternoon over the headquarters. Some crested wheat beginning to show water stress. Dale Veseth delivers 5 yearling bulls. Next phase of flowering plants: Musinion Astragulus pectnicatus Astragulus gilviflorus Thermopsis rhombifolia Viola Weather: Continued mild and breezy conditions.

Where: Cows (254) in L-16. Bulls (18) + 14 horses (always been mixed) in WG-4. Heifers (74) LS-1. Calves-yearlings (264) in EG-4. Fresh splits for only bulls and yearlings (10 acres). Yesterday’s larger splits for cows and heifers support at least one more day of grazing. One more calf with cows and more heifers successfully are calving with more assistance than usual due to unplanned break out of Hereford bull and slow exit on my part. BLM and Beaver analog partners tour parts of ranch for possible sites to slow and hold back water. Wondering out loud if ephemeral saline streams are good candidates for analogs. Weather: Yikes. Cooler and windy and conditions return inspiring rare expressions of profanity.
Where: Cows (254) in L-16. Bulls (18) + 14 horses (always been mixed) in WG-4. Heifers (74) LS-1. Calves-yearlings (264) in EG-4. All groups except bulls move to fresh splits-cows (last two spits 80 acres); yearlings (7 acres); heifers (20 acres). First calf drops aligned with actual planned calving period. Took a head hit from the older cow while unsuccessfully trying to tag the heifer calf. Hmm…might rethink tagging again. Tyler pulls two calves on his own during night check-one easy, the other not so much. We were all most impressed. Steve Charter, Anika and Mike and kids visited the ranch to review upcoming cow lease. |
