Corrals (NNG): Cows (294+15B) + 9 light calves Todd: 2’s and Opens (112) Notes: More straw and no moves. Wolf Moon coming.

Weather: Strong aggravating SW winds return for all day.
Corrals (NNG): Cows (294+15B) + 9 light calves Todd: 2’s and Opens (112) Notes: Same feed schedule. Continue late afternoon cow moves to small acres in NNG to just get me and the cows back into practice. Dana finds new washing machine for the house, and the guest house washing machine decides to start working again. A good day for Dana. Weather: Little cooling yet nothing significant.
Corrals (NNG): Cows (294+15B) + 9 light calves Todd: 2’s and Opens (112) Notes: First very small cow move in late afternoon following full feeding of straw. Second washing machine goes down. Weather: Another mild day.
Corrals (NNG): Cows (294+15B) + 9 light calves Todd: 2’s and Opens (112) Notes: Rush through chores to attend second day of a zoom annual meeting with CNB. Weather: Wind and warming continue bringing some mud, yet evening brings unexpected stillness.
Corrals (NNG): Cows (294+15B) + 9 light calves Todd: 2’s and Opens (112) Notes: Same daily schedule. I feed cows straw, check supplement, fences, and water, evaluate cow condition, then office work and endless calls. Ryan attends to cows at Todd’s and works on equipment and infrastructure and checks water. Light schedule when weather is moderate. Barely one full person required. Four hour zoom annual meeting for CNB. Weather: More blowing, more warming, more melting.
Corrals (NNG): Cows (294+15B) + 9 light calves Todd: 2’s and Opens (112) Notes: I closed off the feed area north of the shelterbelt that despite a full feeding of straw, cows were licking up the ground litter. I guess 3-year-old clover tastes better than wheat straw. Weather: Days begin with strong cool SW winds. Warming not far behind.
Corrals (NNG): Cows (294+15B) + 9 light calves Todd: 2’s and Opens (112) Notes: Cows linger in the protection of the shelterbelt from gusty SW winds not readily coming to the fresh straw I laid out in the morning. Winds gust all day adding some discomfort to the warming trend. Weather: Warming trend back on track with strong SW winds yet today’s temp not high enough to start any melting.
Corrals (NNG): Cows (294+15B) + 9 light calves Todd: 2’s and Opens (112) Notes: Feeding wheat straw on new fresh spots every day. Feeding will get less for a few days as buried straw reemerges with warming temps. 17 days into feeding straw toward meeting our obligatory month. Close to $2 a day combing mineral (.10) straw (25# x .06) protein supp (.30 to .40). Carlyle Stewart is chosen for our 2022 apprentice. A steady concerted effort involving many folks leads to selecting an excellent candidate. Weather: Not so fast cold returns to single digits.
Corrals (NNG): Cows (294+15B) + 9 light calves Todd: 2’s and Opens (112) Notes: Ryan and today still dragging along with colds and covid. Cows’ new protein consumption still too high yet starting to even out. Weather: Big shift feels ‘better than Palm Springs’
Corrals (NNG): Cows (294+15B) + 9 light calves Todd: 2’s and Opens (112) Notes: Unless you experience being cold, you cannot fully welcome a warming trend. All sentient beings at the ranch relax today. |
