Mild and nice with more new green grass showing. Cows move over into WL6-hopefully weaning will occur tomorrow.

Warming conditions return. Cows trailed through corrals to weigh calves (380# average) and move into SNG8 on way to Ryans’ to wean calves. Cows took roughly 7 Ads/acre of feed. Took 1 cow for processing at Project Meats.
While Dana and I were in Italy, the ranch received 3.4 inches of moisture. Cows remained in NBW3,4, and 16, and SBW 1, 1a, 2, 2a, 3, 8, and 9.
Heavy smoke blows in, probably in advance of an approaching storm predicted for later this week and weekend. Everyone hopes it will be for real. Shipped 178 yearlings (average weight 865# at Wolf Point) to McEndaffers’ Feedlot. Loaded 3 trucks in 40 minutes.
More heat. Travel to Wolf Point to help load out yearlings for Colorado tomorrow next morning. Cows remain in ‘big paddock’ with more calves warming to the feeders.
Still pretty hot. I kept working on the ‘big paddock’-dropping wire on paddock lines in the center of the larger paddock and heating up the edges-almost impossible to heat wire because of no grounding in the very dry ground. Cows got out, and I really got angry and ran around getting them back-never works well to lose it. Townsend solitaire, song sparrow, cedar waxwings, and thrashers show up with endless other birds at the house pond. Wonderful.
Very hot! Creep feeders are out for the calves-a few are trying them out. I had to fence off the spring east down on the creek and bring the cows back to the water with the feeders.
So, what is new…my god it is actually hot. More work on the big paddock-so different.
Cooler and a bit breezy. I can actually see the mountains for the first time in awhile. Duane and Daryle Wacker, Judy and Wade Rungen, Ryan and Fawne made for a great crew to work the calves. We crossed the road into the corrals at 8:00, and had everything worked and cows back across road by 1:00. Number update: 22 bulls (8 still scattered out); 345 cows; and 347 calves.
