Weather: Cold, windy, and white. Not super bitter yet just cold.

Weather: Windy, cooling again, and more snow over the course of the day-5 to 6 inches.
Where: Cows (254) in LS-12-16. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (75) EG-9 to include a sliver of EG-8. Calves (242 (268)) in LS-6. Same feeding schedule continues until we break out of this pattern. Hopefully is forecasted in the next couple of days. Another fool day of meetings in Winnett with Wallowa Resources and Swan Valley Connections. Communities can do monitoring and be paid for it and so much more good information where landscape-based communities collaborate with intention. Weather: SW winds turn the tide and w climb above zero and then some.
Where: Cows (254) in LS-12-16. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (75) EG-9 to include a sliver of EG-8. Calves (242 (268)) in LS-6. Less straw for cows (10 bales) and more grazing with heifers and calves. Attending two days of meetings at Winnett with Swan Valley Connections and Wallowa Resources. Advancing best practices for building a Stewardship Economy. Tyler gets some temporary fencing built on south end of LS-17 with hopes of moving cows onto some fresh grass soon. Weather: Clear. Calm. Cold…yet a touch of a moderating influence with light SW winds.
Where: Cows (254) in LS-12-16. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (75) EG-9 to include a sliver of EG-8. Calves (242 (268)) in LS-6. Over 80 bales of straw the last 5 days. All groups doing well. Heifers back out on grass with every other day alfalfa equally about 8#/day. Hair coat on cows has really cleaned up with a healthy shine and fluffiness since we back poured almost a week ago. Caved in to some chemical but not really regretting it now…and yet I would like at some point to bite the bullet and make the change. Dana leaves to meet Moria and Will at CNB Annual meeting in Portland. Weather: Not much relief. Cloudy with light snow. A bit oppressive.
Where: Cows (254) in LS-12-16. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (75) EG-9 to include a sliver of EG-8. Calves (242 (268)) in LS-6. Keeping adequate feed, water, and supplement in front of all the group. Coyotes, Rough-legged hawks, and Horned Larks only winged creatures in the sky. Weather: Bright sun. Clear cold. Mostly calm.
Where: Cows (254) in LS-12-16. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (75) EG-9 to include a sliver of EG-8. Calves (242 (268)) in LS-6. Outside of collecting some errant calves pushed through the fence with yesterday’s NE winds, the livestock attending chores are steady and not too burdensome. Tyler had to fix the calf fence where animals broke out. Weather: Yikes it gets even colder…and then that NE “breeze”!?
Where: Cows (254) in LS-12-16. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (75) EG-9 to include a sliver of EG-8. Calves (242 (268)) in LS-6. Check water, supplement, and more straw and hay for calves. Cows and heifers good. Always nice to end day with waters still working and nothing major broke. Weather: STUPID COLD. Light snow and modest winds thankfully.
Where: Cows (254) in LS-12-16. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (75) EG-9 to include EG-8. Calves (242 (268)) in LS-6. The last two days have fed 40 bales (36000#) of straw to cows. (250 cows x 3=7500 x 5 days = 37500. Should be enough feed to get through snap yet likely will need to feed more. Heifers have ample grass and 8# of good alfalfa hay every other day. Calves 2 bales of hay plus straw and grass. How does a business build the most resiliency into cows, land, people, and infrastructure? Design, design, design. How do we address our fears? Weather: Colder and getting colder.
Where: Cows (254) in LS-12. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (75) EG-9 to include a small bit ofEG-8. Calves (242 (268)) in LS-6. Made some adjustments for the serious cold weather. We built and expanded split for cows from LS-12 into LS-16 to pick some natural wind shelter from the old dam that allows protection form both NE, NW, and SW winds. Put out three days’ worth of straw. For the heifers, we built a small temporary split in front of three-sided windbreak which is technically part of EG-8. Fresh split for calves. We still struggle with keeping our overflows open-need to run more water. Weather: Windy. Cloudy, and unsettled. Cold air will arrive soon.
Where: Cows (254) in LS-12. Bulls (18) in WG-4. Heifers (75) EG-9. Calves (242 (268)) in LS-6. Heifers and calves moving daily…3-to-5-acre splits generally. Cows will remain on full feed straw. |
