Cows move twice and single splits for calves and 2‘s. Dana and I celebrated Valentine’s Day by meeting with our banker to approve our 2024 operating loan. Can you love your banker?
Weather: Sharp cool SW winds. Colder and warmer at the same time yet melt continues.

Trail heifers back to EG-5. Post weaning calf vaccination with help from BJ, Duane and Julie, and our crew-quiet and calm and done in little over an hour. Move calves and cows to new splits. Then a late breakfast-lunch and then the Super Bowl to see our “hometown team” lose a great game in overtime. Weather: Cool calm day. Warming enough for some afternoon snow melt.

Calves move to new split and their afternoon feeding was close to corrals as we plan to give them their third vaccination (post weaning) of a series of four before they are placed in the feedlot next November. Cows moved twice-need Tyler back to correct my daily acreage estimates. Back poured Heifers with Clean Up. Need to kick this pour on habit one of these years. Rick C. and I agreed cows where about a ½ condition score below where we want to be for about a 1/3 of the cows. He felt the heifers, while smaller framed, where a solid 5 CS. Cayse and I enjoyed a wonderful French toast breakfast with French bread from Wild Crumb in Bozeman. Weather: Ground stayed firm most of the day for getting around. Slow warming.

Also, Rick C. planning to show up to condition score cows and collect fecal samples. Eagles, sharp-tails, rough-legged hawks, and horned larks are seen daily. Weather: Light snow, then clearing, and then some warming sun.

Split with cows went slow as we had work to do on the permanent border fence. Moved heifers to new split at end of day. Put four new tubs out with heifers. Consumption to date had been right at ½ pound/day. I am looking at our cows more closely after attending session with Steve Campbell at the Soil Symposium. Weather: Wet and snowy most of the day.

Morning splits for calves, cows, and 2’s. I spent all day at Soil Symposium in Billings. Three to four inches of new wet snow over the course of the day. Not a new take away, yet more affirmation that our only effective tool to improve soil health is through our cows and grazing management. Weather: Hard frost early then turning nice.

Cows move to second and third split in LS-15. Calves move to fresh split in the morning, Heifers moves into first split in EG-5. Heifers will need some lice control soon. Afternoon I head to first day of Soil Symposium. |
