Weather: A pleasant cold with some light snow showers.
Where: BW-2 for cows and LS-9 for calves. Both groups move into new splits. Tomorrow, I need to transition into a larger paddock for the cows away from trees as I will be gone for 4 days to California. Yet, Tyler is quickly getting the hang of moving animals and hopefully will get ample practice splitting paddocks while I am gone.

Weather: Warm gives way to clouds and sharply cooler NE winds.
Where: BW-2 for cows and LS-9 for calves. SPRING EQUINOX Cows, following another breakout, move into 2nd split in south BW-2. And the calves also break out, and following feeding, move into 4th split of about 20 acres. Tyler did this move on his own with the pasture map app. Right out of the chute I am mentoring Tylor via a few unforced errors on my part like not checking the heat on fences, not closing gates in new paddocks, and not building fences on splits. Very effective unintended learning tool. Weather: Hard frost followed by warming days.
Where: BW-2 for cows and LS-9 for calves. Calves move into 3rd split in LS-8. Usually, afternoon moves occur after morning feeding on the frost. Cows stay in first split in south BW-2 and get 2 bales of alfalfa (every other day supplement) despite a brief breakout. Yes, I think I see some green grass shoots coming. I suspect and hope for more storms, yet winter is starting to move to the rear-view mirror. Weather: Carbon copy of the 17th.
Where: BW-3 for cows and LS-9 for calves. Calves move into 2nd split in LS-8. We set it up for cows to move into first split in 9 but the cows watered down at the lower tank and broke into the south end of BW-2 (where there are some trees and not yet grazed). Tyler and I fenced the cows into a split north of the ridge with pine trees, rather than push them back into BW-9. All good-adaptive grazing. One lone mourning dove at the headquarters-apparently got quite a jump on his friends which usually wait for April to arrive. Weather: Blue skies all day. Similar weather pattern with morning frost and warming in the afternoon.
Where: BW-3 for cows and LS-8 for calves. Cows stay put and calves move into first split in LS-9. Bulls (14) are trailed back into the trees in LS to stay until grass starts actively growing. Weather: Slow warming trend with hard overnight frosts and some afternoon melting.
Where: BW-3 for cows and LS-8 for calves. No moves today. Hard frosts have been a blessing to slow down a quick runoff and allow for morning feedings are firm ground. Ryan got bunkhouse plumbing up and running in preparation for Tyler’s arrival. Weather: Sharply cooler with some light snow showers.
Where: BW-10-3 for cows and LS-8 for calves. With water running now in upper end of North Willow Creek, it took most of morning to get cows out of the east of 10 and around to their hay in BW-3. Because I need to be in Lewistown tomorrow to facilitate the CMR working group, I gave the cows the whole paddock. Frustrating as I could have created 3 splits. Calves stay one more day in LS-8-hopefully on new feed by Friday. Hopefully we will welcome our new apprentice Tyler Lu on Friday. Weather: Warmer yet with water running.
Where: BW-10 for cows and LS-8 for calves. Calves get fed early on frozen ground and move back into their pasture grazing rotation for last split. Cow one more day finishing off the feed in BW-10. First large V of migrating geese heading north. Weather: Much warmer and less snow.
Where: BW-10 for cows and LS-8 for calves. Calves stay in lot area for one more day. Cows get 2 bales and hang in the east end of BW-10 and never even come to water, as water is likely close to where they are grazing. Wade trails 14 bulls up to LS where we hope to keep them until the grass starts to grow. Weather: Lovely quiet day with modest a modest warming trend and little wind.
Where: BW-10 for cows and LS-8 for calves. Located and fenced in the calves at the lot and full fed hay and straw. I hope to get things straightened out on Monday and get the calves back into their rotation. No moves with cows as they finish off the last of the grass in BW-10. A little spring triggered singing from the chickadees and the tree sparrows. |
