Light morning frost transitions into a lovely gentle spring day. No new calves from heifers until evening. Natalie and I tune up WL in preparation for cow move. Willet, multiple duck species and first barn swallow observed at reservoir. No sign of dead calf today. We may need to be vigilant with coyotes this season. Cold NW wind blew most of the day. The 2’s kept close to lot. Cows fed their 3 day alfalfa supplement in NBW4. Kestral perched on electric line at headquarters. Two new calves in large mob- arrive little early-one born dead.
Hard frost then turning nice with snow disappearing into green grass. Cows locked into NBW4. 2’s stayed in lot one more day. Bulls have not moved since storm started. Waiting for new birds.
Hard frost with some warming, yet ranch still white. Cows drifting back in NBW 4. 2’s locked in lot area. No calves today. Heifer calving is nearing tail end.
Storm breaks offering a white Easter Sunday. Ryan and Natalie had the day off. I fed everything including the every 3 days cow feed. Eight heifers calved over the last 18 hours-we pulled 3. Lost 2 calves. It is always painful to see a mother after two years in the making now not able to raise a calf.
