NS: 17 bulls and 5 yearlings L (16): Cows (348) Entry: Ryan took 7 culls to Billings. 4.1 inches of rain since February 1. Ryan swears he saw a wolf below his house. Creek quits flowing into the reservoir, as past week has been dry. Weather: Colder and then heating up
NS: 17 bulls and 5 yearlings L (4): Cows (348) (59 + 5 yearlings) Entry: Gone to Pierce’s graduation and home on 6.18. Carlyle and Ryan taking care of ranch. 43 cows to Mannix. Weather: Cooler and more overcast and more no rain.
NS: 17 bulls and 5 yearlings L (4): Cows (348) (59 + 5 yearlings) Entry: Cows move into new paddock. Open cows graze and trail into corrals in preparation for shipment to Mannix’. Rushing to get things done as I leave for CNB and then Connecticut tomorrow. Yikes! Weather: Cool and chance of rain
NS: 17 bulls and 5 yearlings L (5): Cows (348) (59 + 5 yearlings) Entry: One more calf dies. Nearing the end because calving is nearing the end. Perfect temperatures for humans and cows, and probably not gardens, yet no rains. Growing grass as much from temperature as moisture. Dana is closing in on getting garden planted-super effort. Carlyle enjoys branding at Toby’s. Just one of the guys. Weather: Mostly warm like 80’s.
NS: 17 bulls and 5 yearlings L (5): Cows (348) (59 + 5 yearlings) Entry: Two moves. The whole paddock is open. Met Katie, our vet from Harlow, in Lavina to collect multiple tissue samples from yesterday’s dead calf. Sandhill Cranes and one lone elk near reservoir. Creek continues to run into reservoir. Weather: Pleasant and mostly clear.
NS: 17 bulls and 5 yearlings L (5): Cows (348) (59 + 5 yearlings) Entry: Two moves. One calf died-not over yet. Weather: Mild with slight warming. A few drops today but nothing measurable.
NS: 17 bulls and 5 yearlings L (5): Cows (348) (59 +5 yearlings) Entry: Back to two moves per day in new paddock. While on the crested wheat/alfalfa pasture we intentionally do small acreage moves to limit excess intake of alfalfa that might trigger some milk scours in the calves. Barn swallows out an about at 3:00am! Robins and others add more song by 4:00. ONE COOL OBSERVATION IS THE BIG CIRCLES OF AMBROSIA (RAGWEED) ON THE SOUTH SLPES OF BIG WALL CANNOT BE FOUND. Weather: Morning hard shower with a bit of hail.
NS: 17 bulls and 5 yearlings L (5): Cows (416 includes some dries) (48 out + 16 more) Entry: Collected and sent off water and mineral samples to Omaha Lab. Part of the ongoing effort to identity cause for the calf deaths. Carlyle and Wade cut another 17 head out for sale. Scary to observe this hollowing out of our herd. Dana, our county’s election judge, has full day for the Tuesday primary. Weather: More serious shower this afternoon almost .4 tenths.
