Weather: A little warmer.
Where: Cow-yearling mob in LS-15. Bulls (have been) in WG-1. Yearling (150) in Lackey 2. Two splits for the cows to finish out. Rick Caquelin makes a visit to collect fecal samples to assess protein and energy in the feed a month before bulls go in. Calls the cows condition score just under 6. Trailed yearling heifers to Lackey 2. 9 broke off and returned to the cows-four of these are suckers we should have cut out before I trailed.

Where: Cow-yearling mob (450 Ad daily demand) LS-15. Bulls (have been) in WG-1. Two splits for the cows. Wade with a green hose crew successfully cut yearling heifers from the pairs. Great patient cow work and useful strategic placement of temporary wire. We also vaccinated heifers and plan to trail to Lackey cell unit tomorrow. One cows dies unexpectedly-yikes. Continue to move bulls every couple days. Curlews nesting in crested wheat/native grass SE of house where cows have already grazed. Also, a Curlew family nesting in CW in WG-1. Weather:

Where: Cow-yearling mob (450 Ad daily demand) LS-15. Bulls in WG-1. Two splits for cows. I locate lost sheep in Frank Goffene’s-now figuring out how to trap them and get them home. Weather: Mostly clear and cloudy and mild.
Where: Cow-yearling mob (450 Ad daily demand) LS-15. Two splits and Tyler did a lot of temporary fence clean up. I attended the spring Rangeland Monitoring Group with fellow ranchers and NGO staff at the Coulter Ranch in Garfield County. Weather: Continued mild and almost cool.
Where: Cow-yearling mob (450 Ad daily demand) LS-13-15. Picked up pairs early in the morning and trailed into LS-15 and didn’t follow them all the way in. About 30 calves lied down in the back in various places. Pushed everyone up in the evening and locked them in new paddock. Weather: Quick heavy storm with hail and lightning in late afternoon.
Where: Cow-yearling mob (450 Ad daily demand) LS-13. Continuing our two splits a day pattern. I attended the TNC Science Symposium at the Matador. Excellent as always. Weather: Mostly clear and cloudy and mild.
Where: Cow-yearling mob (450 Ad daily demand) LS-13. Two more 5 acre moves for the cows. Last few days the last run of new calves. Lost one more calf that appears to be like the other lost calves. I had hoped it was over. Dana and Tyler headed to Big Timber area for an all-day Native gathering. I had a mid-day meeting with the Musselshell Watershed Coalition. Talks of floods and river damage but nothing like 2011. Weather: Cloudy and mild.
Where: Cow-yearling mob (450 Ad daily demand) LS-13. Two splits of about 5 and 10 acres each. Tyler moved the bulls. Heard a singing Savannah sparrow in LS-13. Learned that our 6 lost sheep are somewhere on Kilby Butte or Frank Goffena’s. Weather: Woke to a thick palpable moist air even though skies were clear.
Where: Cow-yearling mob (450 Ad demand) LS-13. Two splits for cows. One doctored calf is teetering. On the evening move and preparing my brake fence, driving through 3-foot-high grass I drove right over a sharp tail nest just hatching. Hard to explain just how devastating this unintended action felt. Somehow everything I was doing came into question. |
