Some cooling and fresh light winds. Afternoon some cows begin moving into a west side split of SBW9. We are still circling the headquarters to top and break up the clover. Cows are still strongly selecting the clover.
Hot most everywhere in the country-Moria dealing with heat index of 113-except here. About a 3rd of Cows escaped out of NBW16 split past cattle-guard wing and float down to creek, Surprisingly, I get them back in about an hour. I will take it. Kevin Hyde from Climate office fixes mesonet. He, and I, with Austin Shero (NRCS) discuss framework for large regional grant to support the location of 18 more mesonets on individual ranches linked with training and ongoing monitoring collaboration.
Warmer yet still mild. Cows stay put. I travel to Fort Peck to facilitate the CMRCWG meeting. Long day.
No change with weather pattern. Cows move into west-side split in NBW16 along county road. I call them out of the NE corner of 1st split on NBW3. The cows trust the call and cover the ½ mile to the new feed in less than 10 minutes. I appreciate the trust and don’t abuse it.
Very comfortable with light evening thundershowers. Cows stay another day in NBW3. Scotch thistle dispatched finally. Cows spend one more day of in SBW3, as I build the next temporary paddock along county road in NBW16. I am hoping to clean up clover in both sides of the road. I brought home 23 opens and light yearlings that have been in NG7 waiting for a day to take to the auction in Billings.
Much cooler with late afternoon showers. Tested bulls, and all but one tested sound for the upcoming breeding season at the end of the month. Cows remain in NBW3. A few more hours spent pulling/cutting Scotch Thistle.
Thunderstorms are occurring every evening. Sunday the 14th probably the hottest day yet (93) Transition cow move made from SNG8, through new county road paddock, to watering center for NBW3. First and only strip is on the old CRP ground. Cows could have stayed longer putting more pressure on clover, but we needed room in corrals for testing bulls. Cows spent the 14th camped on water-why? I think there was a trust issue being on a new water center. I spent part of afternoon digging out invasive scotch thistle in SBW6. I almost waited to late, as plants were starting to bloom.
