Some rain (.15) over the period. I was on the road attending a CNB summer meeting in Idaho. Cows move into west half of NBW16. On the 8th we began supplementing protein blocks to the cows and providing 2 to 3# alfalfa hay to the 2’s. After a full discussion with the ranch team, we chose to combine the 2’s with the main mob. Decision rested on labor, grass, and bull management, and the need for the 2’s to develop improved mothering skills with the larger group. We also tested bulls. All tested well, yet some newly purchased bulls displayed dangerous temperament behavior and we chose to just sell one of the bulls to avoid some unpleasant future mishap.

A little cool down. Last 2 ½ days in old CRP. Feed is dry and coarse and move quickly through it. Rick C shares GAN sample showing low protein in feed collected (5%). Ouch. We will open up more and provide more selection and probably keep 2’s separate. Protein supplement??
Continued warm. We moved mob to next split (2nd) in NG6a. We moved bulls. Three fledged owls in calving barn.
Just hot. Cows broke out again into SBW8, Built a second split to re-contain cows. 2’s and bulls stay put. Why do cows break out: FUNDAMENTALS OF THE DAILY CHECK: 1) CHECK THE WHOLE FENCE AND HEAT THE WHOLE PADDOCK; 2) CHECK MINERAL AND KEEP REFRESHED; 3) CHECK WATER; 4) CHECK THE ANIMALS; 5) PAUSE AND APPRECIATE WHAT IS BEING DONE, AND WHY IT IS BEING DONE.
Hot with a few clouds. Cows break into SBW8 because we forgot to check all the borders.
