Weather: Mostly clear and almost hot, and then…while attending a Mustang Baseball game in Billings the ranch and surrounding area was clobbered with wind, rain, hail, and a vast lightning show.
WG (11): 18 bulls L (8) 348 (?): One move. Trailed bulls back to WG (11). Referring to evening storm, luckily avoided any major damage yet some bruising to the garden and headquarters.

Weather: Continued unsettled weather yet mostly dry and very warm.
WG (11): 18 bulls L (8): Daily moves. Tested bulls and 3 didn’t pass out of 18. Back to sleeping outside. Despite monsoon like weather in early July, and fresh green cover, we still chose to offer some supplement biuret protein, as we are three weeks from turning bulls out. If the cows need it, it is available free choice, if they don’t use it the cows will exhibit that by simply avoiding the supplement. Weather: More unsettled weather (.1).
WG (11): 18 bulls L (8): One move today. A visit from WSE for an interview for their rancher series. Oh, yes, I turn 73 today. Weather: Mud and clear skies. Thunderstorms move mostly north but we picked up a good shower (.2)
WG (11): 18 bulls L (16-8): Daily move. Weather: Mud and clear skies. Thunderstorms move to the north.
WG (11): 18 bulls L (3-16): Early morning trail of cows back into 3. Very smooth graceful move with just a few calves wanting to head back yet giving up with help of dogs. Roland begins monitoring with help from Carlyle and Kendall. Weather: Rain, rain, rain!
WG (11): 18 bulls L (3): Pairs (340) Entry: July 4th. Bird walk cancelled morning rain (.3 at home) followed by classic thunderstorms all night bringing an additional .75 inches to the ranch. Cows stay put as do I Weather: Cooler trend continues with threatening thunderstorms in the area yet no measurable moisture at the ranch.
WG (11): 18 bulls L (3): Pairs (340) Entry: Move cows into rest of L (?) tonight. Still getting a good clip on the pockets of crested wheat despite drying out quickly. You can see and feel the lack of soil moisture being expressed in the grass. No question, despite our timely moisture, we will see an increase in overall bare ground on the range this year. It’s been Miller time the last couple of weeks- it’s not the beer it’s the moth. Weather: Cooler trend continues with light evening shower.
WG (11): 18 bulls L (3+?): Pairs (340) Entry: Cows seem quite happy with their 150-acre paddock. Major uptick with flies seeming to coincide with yucca being in full bloom. We didn’t have the usual flies we often see at branding time. Cassin Kingbirds and Upland Sandpipers near the south backside of L (3)-just like years past. Weather: Cooler again
WG (11): 18 bulls L (3): Pairs (340) Entry: Cows break into rest of L (3). Maybe the cows are telling me it is time to favor more plant selection and more relaxed moves. I left them there which means at 50 ac per day (leaning to more selection) I have sort of a three-day vacation for everyone. As Carlyle is gone to Michigan for 4 days and it is the fourth weekend-maybe not such a bad call. We did lose one calf that seems related to cutting the testicles, though over the days since branding I have not seen any calf appear sick. Yucca in full bloom- a good full week later than normal. |
