Weather: Soft and fresh and then heat returns.
EG (11): No moves in morning but a breakout into remainder of paddock in the afternoon-two planned splits become just one. Its ok. Moon seems full enough Bats swarm heat laden air Crickets own the sound.

Weather: The best.
LS (11): 6 bulls EG (11): One more split and leaving ample feed behind. Nice mix of upland and riparian perfect for first cycle. Porcupine catch and release begins. Weather: Welcome morning shower bringing over .2” of moisture. Most surprising!
EG (11): One evening split. Cool and damp=equanimity all around. Last 6 bulls in with cows. Weather: Some cooling with rain forecast for tomorrow. Really?? We see, smell, and feel the smoke today. Much later than last year. How will it play out this year?
LS (11): 6 bulls EG (11): Morning move to 3rd split in paddock 11. Not a rush by the cows as much feed remains from where they came. Weather: Red flag warning most of this week with hot windy conditions persisting. Only one hot night without some cooling.
LS (11): 6 bulls EG (11): We moved into 2nd split at around 50 acres. Cows very relaxed. Cows still consuming daily about 150# protein supplement. Photo crew contracted with Quivira’s NAP program arrive to do a shoot focusing on Carlyle and the ranch’s apprenticeship program. Consumed most of our time for a day and half. Good to help support the program. Carlyle leaves for the Blackfoot for 4 days to an apprentice’s Stockmanship workshop with Witt Hibbard. Weather: Hot. Slight cooling at night-little relief. Extreme heat related feedlot deaths for CNB the last week
LS (11): 6 bulls EG (11): Cows back into EG (11) working the riparian area on the north pretty. Last time in this paddock was September 2020. I keep wanting to share that the ranch does have hoppers-in some places 4 to 6 or so per yard. Some localized areas heavier others much lighter. The hoppers are not gone. Projected feed inventory need. Demand and Supply On hand: Straw 555 x 1000 = 277 T + 50T Dan Ray Pre-purchased from Paul McKenna: 79 bales Calves (330): Straw: 3#x150 days x 330= 35 T Hay: 5# x 150 days x 330 = 60 T Grass: 155 (330/2) ads x 180 = 28000/15 ads/ac = 1900 acres/or 1000 with supplemental hay and straw. Mineral and supplement Cows and bulls (320): Straw: 30 x 60 x 320 = 288 T Hay: 300 x 100 x 6 = 90 T Mineral and supplement Weather: Some cooling with evening thunderstorm bringing scary lightning yet enough thankful moisture to avoid fires. For duration weather stay on the 90’s.
WG (11): 15 bulls EG (11): Cows float back into EG (12). Trying to get a little more harvest over the shared splits we created while Carlyle and I were gone. Outside of Ryan experiencing some challenges (another story) and Carlyle escaping miraculously a car wreck/assault at a Chicago friend’s wedding, and myself hanging with folks in Tom Miner Basin talking collaboration amongst Grizzlies and Elk, the team is doing great. |
