Turning a bit colder with uncomfortable brisk SW winds most of day. Calves broke out when spooked by something. Can be dangerous and injurious when a mob of young calves get scared. Nothing hurt this time. I moved cows back into EL 7 to clean up pockets of un-grazed feed and crested wheat patches-testing the efficacy of the Beef Pro 100. Zoom call with Kelsey Molloy and Amy Seamon with Audubon on getting certified with their Conservation Ranching Program.

Continued mild weather. Mostly overcast with light winds out of SW. Sent two trucks of opens and culls (98) to Pays at Billings. Moving cows back to east Lackey to finish off EL 7. Weaned calves are settling in almost done with the Corid treatment. More progress with ranch succession discussion to split the land and livestock enterprises.
Blessedly nice day to work cattle. Trailed cows to home corrals and cut out all culls, bred and open. Packaged 87 plus 2 bulls for shipment to Billings sale for tomorrow. 370 cows heading east through SB9 back to EL. Small bred cull group (33) left for sale. What was remarkable today was the quiet having completed weaning the calves.
Calm clear, and warmer this morning then overcast and light winds. Natalie opens up new split for 2’s at TA. Fourth day of weaning goes without any problems. Plan to trail out tomorrow to headquarter corrals and sort out culls. Plan to ship 2 trucks on the 18th.
Some welcomed calming this morning, yet the wind returns changing from the NW to the SW. The weaning process proceeds without any mishaps. I move bulls out on grass split in NNG3. The map lines no longer aligns with recent changes. Serious need to update map.
Steady uncomfortable winds persist blowing both from the NW and SW. Second day of weaning and everything is holding. I checked the 2’s at Todd’s and all are gaining well. Need to move soon to new split. Good feedback from Wyatt Donald and Burke Tiechert on fine tuning mob grazing with pairs.
Wind. Wind. Wind. Weaned cows and calves. Cows are in SG1 and calves in WL3. Long day for everyone. On of our young bulls died unexpectedly. Red polls feeding on dried sunflowers along county road.
Winds return from the SW slowly bringing warming temperatures. Natalie and I got out the door early to pick the pairs and got them to WG5 by 9:30. We can’t wean these calves soon enough in order to get cows and calves on a different plane of nutrition and maintenance. Much to think about regarding how best to marry grass performance and cow/calf performance, as I think livestock performance has slipped backwards this year. Bulls still in the corral on straw.
Cold NNW wind all day. All day moving pairs toward the corral at Ryans’. The plan was to make it to the corrals, yet when we hit the county road paddock, leaving SBW4, the cows found themselves in a pile of green feed, and try as we might, we ended up just leaving them. Hopefully, we can finish the trail tomorrow morning. Many long V’s of geese heading south. Maybe I should join them.
SW winds continue bringing warming temperatures. Main mob begin heading to Ryan’s corral for a scheduled weaning on Friday (13th). Corridor is WL5, WL1, SBW4, County Road paddock, and finishing in WG5. Weaning pellets for 8 self-feeders arrive today. Bulls remain in corrals on straw and BP100.
