Warmer, cloudy, and windy. No not just windy-crazy windy. I moved the cow group to WL3 first split. Everyone else stayed put. Also tuned up temporary fence at the 2’s. Tatman hauled water to fill tank at Andersons’.
Uncomfortable gusty NW winds make being outside not much fun. Moved calves and feeders into WG2 hoping to get more grazing from calves. Cows stay put. Generator breaks down at 2’s and Ryan lines up Tatmun to haul water. Hope to figure out problem by Monday, or if not, we will need to move 2’s. Light calves got vaccinated and castrated with help from Harley.
Very nice day for December. Cows moved to the 3rd and last split on WL2. Still using biuret supplement rather than alfalfa as a test to improve consumption of crested wheat-results mixed.
More wind yet warmer with a remarkable winter light afternoon calm. Bulls still on the loose-need to address today. Cows moved to 2nd split in WL2. Calves spooked last night and blew through some fence. Ryan got everything back in place by late morning. Good visit with Natalie and Roland reviewing gazing report to NE.
Cold winds pick up from the SW likely bringing warming temperatures. No moves today. I pushed escaped bulls partially back to where they came. Nice flock of tree sparrows hanging out in the yard. I am seeing sharptails almost everywhere I go. Still light with Rough-legged hawk numbers.
Cold and calm seem to go together. In late afternoon moved cows to WL2. I checked 2’s. The generator was not starting up and the water tank was low. Ryan will check it out. Bulls break out and drifted clear to county road north of headquarters.
Cloudy and cold this morning. Natalie heads north to Havre and her partner Paul at Vilicus Farms. All of us remaining are most happy and grateful she will be returning in March for one more apprenticeship season. I moved cows to 3rd split on WL6. I mixed biuret supplement 1 to 1 with salt and still having trouble controlling consumption.
Woke to colder temps with 2 to 3 inches of new snow. Trailed calves back to Ryan’s, as feeders received new shipment of pellets. We moved cows to 2nd split in WL6. Ryan checked 2’s and re-fixed temporary fence that the antelope mess up almost daily. 2’s nicely located on new unit of cover crop and continue to look incredible.
